The Rolling Stones Drop Two New Tracks as ‘Foreign Tongues’ Anticipation Builds

The Rolling Stones have released two new songs from their upcoming studio album, “Foreign Tongues,” giving fans their clearest look yet at one of the most anticipated rock releases of the summer. The tracks, “Jealous Lover” and “Divine Intervention,” dropped together on June 25 and immediately became one of the most-discussed rock stories online, drawing attention not just for the music but for the star power surrounding it.

“Jealous Lover” arrives with a music video directed by Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor — the duo behind past visual work for Radiohead and Jack White — and stars actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Charles Melton. The video, currently available exclusively through Amazon Music, dramatizes the song’s lyrics with a tense, jealousy-fueled storyline between the two actors that escalates from a parking-lot confrontation into a motel-set showdown.

Musically, the track marks a notable shift in tone. Where the album’s first single, “In the Stars,” leaned into upbeat pop-rock energy, “Jealous Lover” settles into a soulful, R&B-inflected groove built around a falsetto vocal performance from Mick Jagger reminiscent of the band’s “Emotional Rescue” era. Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood provide the song’s guitar interplay, while longtime collaborator Steve Winwood contributes Rhodes piano and organ. Producer Andrew Watt — who also helmed the band’s 2023 album “Hackney Diamonds” — plays additional guitar, synths, and piano on the track.

The second song released alongside it, “Divine Intervention,” carries more star power still. The track features additional guitar work from The Cure frontman Robert Smith, marking one of two songs on the new album where Smith appears. Saxophonist James King and trumpeter Ron Blake round out the arrangement, alongside Winwood and Watt once again. According to Jagger, Smith’s involvement in the album came about almost by accident — the singer has described arriving at a London studio session to find Smith already there, unannounced, ready to record.

Both songs are set for a physical release as well: a 10-inch, 33⅓ RPM green vinyl single is scheduled to follow on July 31, giving collectors a physical counterpart to the digital release.

“Foreign Tongues” itself is shaping up to be one of the band’s most collaborative records in years. Beyond Smith and Winwood, the album reportedly also features contributions from Paul McCartney and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, along with an archival recording from the band’s late longtime drummer, Charlie Watts. The 14-track album is due out July 10 via Capitol Records, again produced by Andrew Watt, who has become a key creative partner for the band since “Hackney Diamonds” earned them a Grammy Award in 2023.

To build anticipation ahead of the release, the band has also launched a six-episode podcast, “Speaking in Tongues,” which takes listeners through the writing and recording process behind the album, featuring commentary from Jagger, Richards, Wood, Watt, Smith, and Winwood.

For a band now well into its seventh decade together, the response to “Jealous Lover” and “Divine Intervention” suggests The Rolling Stones remain capable of generating real cultural buzz — not as a nostalgia act, but as a band still actively shaping conversation in rock music today.
