When Paul McCartney took the stage at Madison Square Garden during the wedding reception of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, guests were treated to a moment few could have expected.
The music legend reached deep into The Beatles catalog to perform the band’s classic hit I Want to Hold Your Hand — a song he hadn’t publicly performed since 1964.
According to records from setlist.fm, McCartney’s last known performance of the song came during The Beatles concert at the Paramount Theatre shortly after the track became the band’s first No. 1 hit in America. More than six decades later, the song made an emotional return as the soundtrack to one of pop culture’s most talked-about weddings.
The surprise performance was first reported by People Magazine, which also revealed that McCartney wasn’t the only music icon to perform during the celebration. Rock legend Stevie Nicks also took the stage, adding another unforgettable moment to the evening.
Swift’s connection with both artists goes back years. McCartney recently spoke about the similarities between Beatlemania and the global phenomenon surrounding Swift’s career during an interview with BBC Sounds.
“I don’t think she needs any advice, to tell you the truth,” McCartney said. “If she asked for it, I definitely would.” He jokingly described himself as “the granddad” of Swift’s generation of artists.
Swift and Nicks have shared a close friendship since performing together at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Over the years, Swift has frequently praised the former Fleetwood Mac singer for her wisdom and guidance.
“I have Stevie Nicks in my life in a way that affects me positively constantly,” Swift once said during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “She paved the way for me and many other artists out there.”
Nicks has been equally complimentary of Swift, emphasizing the importance of honesty in songwriting and public life. Speaking with TODAY, she said, “I never don’t tell the truth. And I think that if Taylor got anything from me, that’s what she got.”
With McCartney reviving a Beatles classic for the first time in more than 60 years and Nicks adding her own legendary touch to the celebration, Swift and Kelce’s wedding reception became more than a star-studded event — it became a once-in-a-generation musical moment.
