Ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted reveals former cancer diagnosis: “I beat it”

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted has shared a deeply personal chapter of his life, revealing for the first time that he quietly battled throat cancer over the past year—and won.

Speaking on the Let There Be Talk podcast, the 63-year-old musician reflected on his diagnosis and recovery with raw honesty. Newsted revealed that May 8th marks one year since he underwent surgery to remove the cancer. The procedure was intense, involving both surgical removal and laser treatment.

“They took a bunch of stuff out,” he explained candidly, describing how the experience physically changed him. “The cavern inside my head is different than it was—but we got it early.”

That early detection made all the difference. Just weeks ago, Newsted received the news he had been hoping for: he’s officially cancer-free.

“I got my ‘free and clear’ about three weeks ago,” he said. “So I beat it.”

But the journey wasn’t just physical—it reshaped his entire lifestyle.

For the first time in his life, Newsted was forced to slow down. Known for his relentless energy and “all or nothing” approach, he made a promise to himself to rest and recover properly.

“I promised myself I was going to take the gravity off and lay down for the right amount of hours,” he shared.

That pause led to something unexpected: clarity. Newsted now describes himself as feeling more clear-headed than ever before in his adult life. Part of that transformation came from letting go of long-standing habits.

“There’s no way I would’ve stopped smoking weed, drinking, or doing all those things on my own,” he admitted. “But something bigger got my attention and told me it wasn’t good right now.”

The experience, while challenging, became a turning point—one that forced him to reset both physically and mentally.

Newsted, who famously left Metallica on his own terms, has long been a unique figure in the band’s history. In a 2021 interview, Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield acknowledged that he remains the only member to voluntarily step away, something they didn’t fully understand at the time.

Meanwhile, Metallica continues to charge ahead, with major tours planned across the UK and Europe later this year, along with a special two-night performance celebrating the 25th anniversary of Mohegan Sun Arena.

As for Newsted, his latest chapter isn’t about touring or recording—it’s about survival, perspective, and a renewed sense of self. And by the sound of it, he’s embracing that second chance with clarity he never had before.
