Def Leppard reveal that their 13th studio album is on track for an early 2027 release.

More than four decades into their career, Def Leppard are proving they still have plenty left in the tank. According to frontman Joe Elliott, the legendary rock band is deep into work on what will become their 13th studio album — and fans may not have to wait too much longer to hear it.

In a recent interview with France 24, Elliott revealed that the band already has an impressive amount of material prepared, saying Def Leppard currently have “17 or 18 songs” written. That is far more than a standard album requires, leaving the group in the unusual position of sitting on what Elliott described as “almost two albums” worth of music.

What makes the update even more interesting is that the project is not simply in the songwriting phase anymore. Def Leppard are already recording portions of the material while continuing to shape the final direction of the album. Rather than rushing toward a release date, the band appears focused on carefully deciding which songs belong on the record and which tracks may be saved for a future release.

That approach says a lot about where the band is creatively. Instead of scraping together enough material to complete a record, Def Leppard are working from a position of abundance. The challenge is no longer writing songs — it is choosing the strongest collection from a large pool of ideas.

The upcoming album will follow 2022’s Diamond Star Halos, a release that marked the band’s first full-length studio effort since their 2015 self-titled album. Since then, Def Leppard have continued to stay active musically, including the release of the single Rejoice in January 2026 ahead of their latest Las Vegas residency.

The timing also fits with the band’s packed schedule. Def Leppard launched their third Las Vegas residency in February 2026 at Caesars Palace, keeping them firmly in front of audiences while simultaneously working behind the scenes on new music. Elliott’s comments suggest the next album is currently targeting an early 2027 release window rather than arriving later this year.

For longtime fans, perhaps the biggest takeaway is simple: Def Leppard are far from slowing down. The band is still writing, still recording, and still evolving — with enough material already on hand to potentially shape more than one future release.

At this point, the only mystery is which songs will make the final cut for album number thirteen, and which tracks the band may choose to hold back for whatever comes next.
