Willie Nelson’s Wife Annie, 69, Jokes He’s ‘Benjamin Buttoning’ Her at 92: ‘He Just Keeps Going’

Willie Nelson is still going strong at 92.

The country legend recently spoke with The New Yorker in an interview published Monday, Dec. 22, opening up about his health, daily routine, and outlook on life. His wife, Annie D’Angelo, 69, summed it up with a laugh, joking that Nelson is “Benjamin Buttoning” her.

According to the magazine, Nelson stays active with a simple but consistent fitness routine that includes sit-ups, arm rolls, leg lifts, and jogging in place. “I’m in pretty good shape, physically, for ninety-two,” he said. “Woke up again this morning, so that’s good.”

The 15-time Grammy winner continues to perform regularly and believes music plays a role in his longevity. “Singing for an hour is good for you,” he told the outlet. His daughter Amy agrees, adding, “I think it’s literally keeping him alive.”

Nelson has faced health challenges over the years, including emphysema and a serious bout of COVID-19, but he remains active and continues to tour. “He just keeps going and going,” Annie said. “He’s Benjamin Buttoning me.”

The couple met on the set of one of Nelson’s films in 1986 and married in 1991. They share two sons, Lukas, 36, and Micah, 35. Nelson is also father to daughters Lana, Susie, Paula, and Amy, as well as the late Renee Butts, and son Billy, who died in 1991.

Earlier this year, Annie addressed an inaccurate report from AXS TV suggesting their sons were acting as primary caregivers. In a comment on Instagram, she corrected the record. “I still take care of my husband,” she wrote, adding that Lukas and Micah have always been there to support the family.

Nelson has consistently expressed confidence in his health. In a November 2024 interview with the Associated Press, he said, “I feel like I’m in pretty good shape physically.” He added that he takes good care of himself and isn’t preoccupied with the idea of dying. “I don’t feel bad. I don’t hurt anywhere. I don’t have any reason to worry about it.”

Willie Nelson attends a press conference during the Farm Aid 2022 music festival at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park on September 24, 2022 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

At 92, Willie Nelson continues to do what he’s always done—make music, stay moving, and live life on his own terms.
