Known for his knack for upbeat country songs with a touch of southern humor, Toby Keith released his single “Wacky Tobaccy” in 2017—a playful ode to that infamous green plant. And who better to star alongside him in the music video than the legendary Willie Nelson?
“‘Wacky Tobaccy’ is a slogan that’s been around forever, and no one has ever put it in a song,” Keith told The Music Universe. “When we were working on it, someone asked if it had ever been written in a song, and I said, ‘no, but they will now.’ We recorded it and shot the video in Nashville, and we were lucky enough to get a cameo from Willie. We’ve had a long-standing friendship, and it was perfect for the song. ‘Wacky Tobaccy’ is written to the screws and fits right in with the party vibe we bring to our shows.”
This collaboration marked a playful reversal from Keith’s 2003 hit, “I’ll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again,” as he welcomed Nelson to relax and jam with him and his band on the tour bus. The music video, shot on the bus with Keith’s bandmates, takes a hilarious turn when Nelson emerges from the bathroom enveloped in a cloud of smoke.
Nelson quickly grabbed his guitar and started jamming with the band before the crew dug into pizza and hot wings. The country icon co-wrote “Wacky Tobaccy” with longtime collaborator Scotty Emerick as one of his classic “bus songs.”
With Toby Keith’s passing, this playful and lighthearted collaboration between two country legends becomes even more memorable, a joyful snapshot of friendship and music.
