Season 29 of The Voice has shaken up the classic format with several exciting changes. For the first time, the show features three coaches instead of four, all of whom are former winners. Kelly Clarkson even earned a new twist called the Super Steal, allowing her to bring back an extra artist later in the competition and potentially advance them to the finale.
One of the biggest surprises this season was Clarkson’s absence during the first night of Battle Rounds. She missed rehearsals for her team and asked fellow Jennifer Hudson, also a former Voice coach and American Idol alum, to step in.
Why was Clarkson away? The Battle Round episodes were filmed in late summer 2025, shortly after Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock—stepson of Reba McEntire—passed away on August 7 following a three-year battle with skin cancer. Kelly and Brandon, who were married from 2013 to 2022, share two children, River Rose and Remington.
The day before his passing, Clarkson postponed her Las Vegas residency to be with her children, sharing a heartfelt note:
“I need to be fully present for my children. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets and so appreciate your grace and understanding.”
Despite the personal tragedy, Clarkson returned for her 10th non-consecutive season as the winningest female coach in the show’s history. Fans were thrilled to see her back and supportive of her temporary absence.
During Monday’s Battle Round episode, Clarkson didn’t directly address Brandon’s passing but expressed regret about missing rehearsals:
“I really hated that I couldn’t be there for Battle rehearsals, but I got to see the video footage. J. Hud left notes and things for the team to work on—it was amazing intel. Nothing beats live music, so that’s what I’m excited about.”
One highlight of the episode featured Team Kelly’s Liv Ciara and Mikenley Brown, whose Battle performance had coach Adam Levine calling it “the best Battle Round I have ever heard.” Fans can watch the unforgettable performance in the video below.
