Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend are back in their red chairs—and this time, they’re not holding back.
NBC has released the official trailer for Season 29 of The Voice, aptly titled The Voice: Battle of Champions, and it makes one thing clear: the competition is fiercer than ever. PEOPLE exclusively debuted the first look at the revamped season, which premieres February 23 and promises a bold new twist on the longtime singing competition.
“It’s the battle of champions for a reason,” Legend declares at the start of the trailer, setting the tone for a season fueled by bragging rights, rivalry, and elite talent.
The teaser quickly highlights the competitive dynamic between the three veteran coaches. Levine reminds viewers, “I’m the first coach ever to win the show,” while Clarkson fires back with a grin, “But I have won the most!” The playful banter escalates as Levine teases one performance as “explosive,” claiming it’s unlike anything the show has seen before.
At another point, Legend and Levine jokingly spar over their Grammy credentials, each pointing out they’ve won Best New Artist. Clarkson humorously chimes in, “I hate when dad and dad fight,” perfectly capturing the trio’s chemistry.
The trailer also reveals several “super surprises,” including the return of original Voice coach CeeLo Green. Green, who coached during the show’s first three seasons, is back in a new role—serving as the decision-maker for every All-Star Showdown. His dramatic entrance clearly leaves an impression, with Clarkson joking, “I’m totally gonna steal that for my Vegas show.”
Season 29 marks a significant shift for The Voice. For the first time ever, the show will feature just three coaches instead of four, with each coach starting with 10 artists on their team. According to NBC, the “landmark season will be infused with fast-paced, competitive elements,” designed to raise the stakes for both coaches and contestants.
The revamped format will include multiple rounds: Blind Auditions, Battles, Knockouts, semifinals, and finals. Adding to the excitement, several fan-favorite winners and finalists are returning to compete. Clarkson’s team will feature Girl Named Tom and Jake Hoot, Legend’s team includes Maelyn Jarmon and Renzo, while Levine brings back Javier Colon and Jordan Smith.
Clarkson last appeared as a coach in Season 23, while Legend and Levine most recently coached together during Season 27. Their reunion, combined with the high-stakes format and returning champions, sets the stage for one of the most intense seasons yet.
