One Judge’s Powerful Reaction Turns Trew The Star’s Emotional American Idol Audition Into an Unforgettable Moment

Trew The Star walked into his American Idol audition carrying more than just a dream — he carried his family’s story with him. “For me, this is bigger than auditioning,” he shared before stepping in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan at Belmont University in Nashville. “It’s about showing my family that you can do anything you put your mind to.”

The 24-year-old Montgomery, Alabama native — whose real name is Trevon Williams — performed Sam Cooke’s classic “Nothing Can Change This Love.” While his soulful vocals impressed the judges, it was the personal journey behind them that left an even deeper mark.

Trew opened up about losing his mother, Shantil, in 2022 — a loss that continues to shape his life and music. Some of his earliest memories are of watching American Idol with her. “That was my first memory of loving music,” he said.

His childhood, however, was far from easy. He spoke honestly about growing up in a home affected by addiction, often without basic utilities, and stepping into a parental role for his younger siblings. “Growing up was tough. My mom was on drugs,” he revealed. “There were times we didn’t have water or lights. I had to take care of my little siblings.” Reflecting on generational struggles, he added quietly, “History repeats itself.”

Eventually, their family intervened, and his mother began working toward sobriety. Trew shared that he had only recently begun to fully understand and forgive her before her passing. “I had just started to forgive her for a lot of things. It was hard. Very hard.”

Determined to break the cycle, Trew found hope in music — and in American Idol. His brother Joshua recalled how Trew once talked about running away to Hollywood with just a guitar, determined to sing his way to a better future. “He was determined,” Joshua said emotionally. “I’m glad you kept that energy.”

When Trew began singing, the room fell still. Accompanied by piano, his rendition of “Nothing Can Change This Love” was tender yet powerful — a performance filled with control, emotion, and authenticity. He honored Sam Cooke’s legacy while adding his own heartfelt touch.

Lionel Richie rose from his seat to hug him. “We’re proud of you, son,” he said warmly. “You did well. I love that.”

Carrie Underwood praised his intentional delivery, noting that he resisted the urge to overpower the song. “You were just telling us a story,” she said. “It was believable.”

Luke Bryan admitted the performance gave him “full-body chills,” calling it real and genuine. “I just cheer for you,” he told Trew. “I want to see your family enjoy this.”

For Trew The Star, the audition wasn’t just about advancing in a competition — it was about honoring his mother, uplifting his siblings, and proving that even the hardest beginnings can lead to something beautiful.
