Happy’s Place is back from its Winter Olympics hiatus, and star Melissa Peterman is sharing insights about Gabby’s latest adventures and what’s ahead this season.
In the recent episode “No,” Gabby becomes obsessed with a simple hook-and-ring game that Takoda brings into the tavern, so much so that she begins ignoring customers. Peterman revealed that the game wasn’t just a prop—the cast couldn’t stop playing it off-camera, leading to some amusing rehearsal challenges. “It’s deceptively simple, but I’m competitive, so the writers knew I’d get hooked,” Peterman explained.

The episode also digs deeper into Gabby’s relationship with her mom. Through the game, Gabby recalls playing as a child to gain her mother’s attention, a vulnerable and emotional moment that adds “another layer” to her character. Peterman shared, “It’s a comedy, but most humor comes from real-life struggles. That scene, though small, carried a lot emotionally.”
Gabby’s journey toward motherhood is another major focus this season. After choosing a sperm donor earlier in the season and briefly thinking she was pregnant, Gabby’s storyline explores the complexities and emotions of trying to start a family. Peterman, whose own son is 20, said, “Just the idea of having a baby again—even pretend—is delightful. It’s a storyline many women can relate to: figuring out timing, relationships, and what they truly want.”
Peterman praised her co-star Tokala Black Elk, who plays Takoda, for bringing wisdom and grounding to the scenes. His guidance helps Gabby—and the audience—understand her motivations and emotions, balancing comedy with depth.

Season 2 promises to wrap up Gabby’s storyline by the end of the season, leading her character in new directions that were sometimes unexpected, even for the writers. Peterman said, “It’s a very relatable journey, and I was invested in how it ended. I think viewers will connect with it.”
Fans can continue following Gabby’s growth, laughter, and heartfelt moments every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, with next-day streaming available on Peacock.
