Since American Idol made the jump from Fox to ABC in 2018, the long-running singing competition has stayed remarkably consistent, delivering one new season every year. Most recently, the show wrapped its 23rd overall season in spring 2025.
Ahead of that finale, ABC officially renewed American Idol for another season. The upcoming installment will mark Season 9 on ABC and Season 24 overall. Now, nearly six months after the renewal announcement, more details have emerged about the show’s return.
When does American Idol Season 24 premiere?
Season 24 is set to premiere on Monday, January 26, 2026, at 8/7c on ABC. This represents a notable shift for the series, which has typically launched in late February or early March in recent years. The new season also moves to a Monday night time slot after previously airing on Sundays.
Who are the judges for Season 24?
The judging panel was revealed on August 25, confirming that Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie will return for a second consecutive season together. The trio announced the news via a playful social media video themed around “Idol University,” with each judge adopting a tongue-in-cheek academic role.
Bryan and Richie have both served as judges since Idol debuted on ABC, while Underwood joined the panel in Season 23, replacing Katy Perry after her seven-season run. Ryan Seacrest will once again return as host, a role he’s held since the show’s original 2002 premiere.
When are auditions for Season 24?
ABC also announced the return of “Idol Across America,” the show’s live virtual audition process. Auditions begin Tuesday, August 26, and will take place across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., continuing through late August and much of September. Eligible singers worldwide can audition either through scheduled virtual slots or open call dates for a chance to advance to judge auditions.
What’s new for Hollywood Week?
Contestants who make it through auditions will head to Hollywood Week — but with a major twist. For the first time in the show’s history, Hollywood Week will be held in Nashville instead of Los Angeles. Dubbed Hollywood Week: Music City Takeover, the event will consist of a single round and feature what producers are calling the largest cut in American Idol history.
