Fans around the world have received a hopeful update on legendary Welsh singer-songwriter Bonnie Tyler after weeks of concern over her health.
Tyler, 74, has emerged from a medically induced coma but remains in intensive care in Portugal, according to a statement released by her family and management team. The update comes five weeks after the singer was hospitalized following emergency intestinal surgery in the Algarve, where she owns a home.
The music icon underwent the urgent procedure after feeling unwell. During her treatment, she was placed into a coma and reportedly suffered cardiac arrest when medical staff previously attempted to wake her.
In the latest statement shared on her official website, Tyler’s family revealed that while her condition remains serious, there are encouraging signs of progress.
“Bonnie is no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in a hospital in Portugal,” the statement read. “Although her condition is improving, it is a slow process.”
Despite the challenges ahead, doctors remain optimistic about her recovery.
“Doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery, but it is going to take time,” the statement added.
As a result of her ongoing health issues, Tyler has been forced to cancel or postpone all of her remaining summer performances. The affected dates include shows across Germany, Türkiye, Czechia, Hungary and Romania, along with appearances at two UK music festivals.
Her team explained that every scheduled performance through the end of August would be impacted, though there is still hope that planned autumn concerts can proceed.
“We are sorry to tell everyone that we will be cancelling, or postponing until next year where possible, all of our remaining shows this summer,” the statement said.
The family also expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support Tyler has received from fans worldwide.
“We would like to thank everyone for the huge outpouring of love and support from all over the world that we have received for Bonnie and want to tell you that she is aware of, and very grateful for, your good wishes.”
They additionally requested privacy as Tyler continues her recovery, noting that further updates will be shared when appropriate.
Reports from Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manhã suggest Tyler’s health problems began earlier this year. She reportedly first became ill in March after returning to the United Kingdom for a concert at the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire and later sought medical attention upon returning to the Algarve.
Tyler remains one of Britain’s most celebrated musical performers. In 2023, she was awarded an MBE for services to music, an honor she described as even more meaningful than receiving multiple Grammy nominations.
“I never ever thought I would have something like this,” Tyler said at the time. “My mother and father would be so proud. To be nominated for a Grammy was wonderful, but to be given an MBE for something I absolutely love doing is a highlight of my career.”
For now, fans around the globe continue to send their well wishes as the beloved singer focuses on what her doctors hope will be a full recovery.
