Rush continued their triumphant Fifty Something Tour with a second sold-out performance at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum on Tuesday, June 9, treating fans to one of the most remarkable setlists of their modern era.
After launching the tour in spectacular fashion on Sunday, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson—joined by touring drummer Anika Nilles and keyboardist Loren Gold—returned to the stage for night two and proved that their promise of changing the setlist from show to show was far more than just talk.
Speaking to Rolling Stone last year, Lee revealed that the band intended to keep every performance fresh by rotating a substantial portion of the setlist. Tuesday’s concert was the first real demonstration of that philosophy, with several tour debuts and some long-forgotten fan favorites making their return.
The evening began with the familiar pairing of “Xanadu” and “The Spirit of Radio,” but fans quickly realized they were in for something special when Rush launched into “The Analog Kid,” making its first appearance of the tour. Additional surprises in the opening set included the instrumental favorite “Leave That Thing Alone,” the powerful “Headlong Flight,” and the return of “The Trees,” which hadn’t been performed live since 2008.
Yet all of those moments were overshadowed by what happened during the second set.
In a move few fans expected, Rush performed their entire seven-part epic “2112” from beginning to end. While portions of the landmark 1976 composition have appeared in past tours, this marked the first time since the Test for Echo Tour in 1997 that the band performed the complete suite, including rarely played sections such as “Discovery,” “Oracle: The Dream,” and “Soliloquy.”
The Forum erupted as Rush delivered the 20-minute progressive rock masterpiece in its entirety, creating one of the defining moments of the Fifty Something Tour.
The surprises didn’t stop there. The second set also featured tour debuts of “Animate,” “Closer to the Heart,” “A Passage to Bangkok,” “Anthem,” and “Witch Hunt.” Classics including “Time Stand Still,” “YYZ,” “Red Barchetta,” and “Tom Sawyer” rounded out the evening before the band closed the show with an encore of “Finding My Way” and “Working Man.”
If Rush’s first two performances are any indication, fans attending the remaining Los Angeles shows—and the rest of the tour—can expect a different experience every night. With four decades of material to choose from and a commitment to keeping the setlists unpredictable, the Fifty Something Tour is shaping up to be one of the most exciting chapters in the band’s legendary live history.
