The long-awaited biopic about rock legend Ozzy Osbourne is still very much in development, according to his son Jack Osbourne. While fans have been hoping for news of production progress or a release date, the latest update suggests the film is moving forward—but at a slower, more realistic pace than many expected.
“The script is right there”
During a livestream on May 12, 2026, Jack Osbourne gave one of the most confident updates yet on the project’s status. He confirmed that the script is finished and that the production team is actively working behind the scenes.
“We are moving ahead,” he said, emphasizing that discussions and planning are ongoing. He added that he had been on calls about the film that very day and made it clear that the project is still alive and progressing.
According to Jack, the team is currently focused on finding a director, which indicates the biopic is still in development rather than moving into filming.
A more realistic timeline: 2028
While the confirmation of progress will reassure fans, Jack also tempered expectations about when the movie might actually arrive. Given the current stage of development, he suggested a more realistic release window is around 2028.
“Realistically… it probably won’t come out until ’28,” he noted, pointing out that even with momentum, major biopics take time to assemble properly.
Years in the making
The Ozzy Osbourne biopic has been in various stages of development for several years. It was first announced in 2021, with acclaimed screenwriter Lee Hall attached to the project. Early reports suggested director negotiations were underway, but no final appointment was ever confirmed.
More recently, Jack Osbourne revealed that a “phenomenal actor” had already been chosen to portray Ozzy, though the identity remains under wraps. He also confirmed that the script has gone through revisions while maintaining involvement from its original writer.
A project shaped by legacy and loss
The film’s development has continued through a deeply emotional period for the Osbourne family. Ozzy Osbourne passed away in July 2025 at the age of 76, shortly after his farewell performance at Villa Park in Birmingham. That final concert marked a historic reunion of the original Black Sabbath lineup for the first time in nearly two decades.
Since his passing, the family has been focused on preserving his legacy through multiple projects, including posthumous releases and documentaries such as No Escape From Now and Coming Home, as well as the autobiography Last Rites.
Jack Osbourne’s role behind the scenes
Jack has described his involvement in the biopic as something of a learning experience. Acting as a middleman between the film’s production team and the Osbourne family, he helps relay questions, feedback, and decisions as the project develops.
He even joked that he considers himself the “least qualified” person involved, but says he is enjoying seeing how the film industry operates from the inside.
Still moving forward
Despite the long timeline and evolving circumstances, the message from Jack Osbourne is consistent: the project is not stalled or abandoned. The script is complete, development continues, and the team is actively working toward bringing the story to the screen.
For fans of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, patience will still be required—but the biopic remains firmly on the horizon, with 2028 now shaping up as the earliest realistic arrival.
