Music fans across the country are quickly getting to know Hannah Harper — a gifted singer-songwriter whose emotional American Idol audition introduced her to a much wider audience. Though she has spent years building a loyal following online and releasing music independently, her appearance on the show marked a powerful new chapter in her journey.
On Monday, February 2, Harper stepped onto the American Idol stage and performed an original song titled “String Cheese” for judges Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, and Lionel Richie. Inspired by motherhood, the performance showcased both her soaring vocals and her raw honesty, earning her a golden ticket and immediate praise from the judges.

Hailing from southeast Missouri, Harper blends country, bluegrass, and gospel influences into her sound. She first began performing at just nine years old and later returned to her home state to raise a family while continuing to pursue music.

Before launching her solo career, Harper spent seven years performing with her family’s bluegrass band, The Harper Collective, alongside her parents and siblings. The group toured nationally, won the 2010 SPBGMA International Band Contest, and recorded two albums.
Now married for eight years and a mother of three boys, Harper balances family life with her music career. She often credits her faith and family as her foundation, themes that shine through in her songwriting.
Fans were especially moved by the story behind “String Cheese,” which was inspired by Harper’s experience with postpartum depression and a quiet, grounding moment at home with her son. That deeply personal performance didn’t just earn her a spot in the competition — it revealed an artist whose music is rooted in real life, resilience, and purpose.
