The hit reality competition not only gave aspiring singers a national platform but also paired them with superstar coaches like John Legend, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and others who helped guide their careers. While many contestants found success after the show, some incredibly gifted artists tragically passed away, leaving lasting impressions on fans and the music world.
Several winners and finalists have gone on to build strong followings and thriving careers. Danielle Bradbery and Cassadee Pope, both coached by Blake Shelton, became standout success stories, amassing hundreds of thousands of followers and releasing successful albums. However, not every journey had a happy ending, and a number of beloved contestants were lost far too soon.
Beverly McClellan
Beverly McClellan captured hearts during season 1 with her gritty, rock-infused performances, including her powerful take on Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” A member of Christina Aguilera’s team, she finished third in the competition and became known for her raw vocals and bold style. Despite her strong run on the show, Beverly’s career was cut short after she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. She passed away in October 2018 at the age of 49.
Christina Grimmie
Christina Grimmie rose to fame on season 6 after her emotional performance of “Wrecking Ball,” which earned instant chair turns and a standing ovation from the coaches. Adam Levine famously predicted she would become a huge star, and she finished third that season. Following the show, Christina enjoyed major success online, with multiple songs charting on iTunes. Her life was tragically taken in 2016 when she was shot after a concert in Orlando. She was just 22 years old.
Anthony Riley
Anthony Riley stunned both the judges and viewers during season 8 with his electrifying rendition of James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” earning all four chair turns in seconds. He joined Pharrell Williams’ team but later withdrew from the competition to address personal struggles. In 2015, Riley passed away at the age of 28. His death was later ruled a suicide, and he is remembered as one of the most powerful vocalists to appear on the show.
Nolan Neal
Nolan Neal appeared on The Voice multiple times, first in 2016 and later in season 11, where he impressed judges with his soulful cover of “Tiny Dancer.” Although he was eliminated during the knockout rounds, Neal continued pursuing music and later competed on America’s Got Talent. He built a dedicated fanbase but passed away in July 2022 at age 41 due to acute combined drug toxicity.
Janice Freeman
Janice Freeman made her mark on season 13 with her high-energy performance of Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive,” earning praise from all the coaches and joining Miley Cyrus’ team. Though she was eliminated early, she remained a fan favorite and continued performing on the show. Freeman passed away in 2019 at age 33 after suffering a pulmonary embolism caused by pneumonia. Her death deeply affected the The Voice community, with Cyrus pledging support to Freeman’s family.
