The Voice wrapped up its 28th season in December 2025, with Niall Horan once again serving as one of the show’s standout coaches. But when Season 29 premieres on February 23, 2026, fans will notice a major change: Niall won’t be returning to the iconic red chair.
NBC has confirmed that Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine, and John Legend will serve as coaches for Season 29, alongside a revamped format that promises fresh twists. While excitement is building for the new season, many viewers are wondering why one of the show’s most successful coaches is sitting this one out.
During his time on The Voice, Niall proved to be an unbeatable force. Every season he coached ended in victory — with Aiden Ross winning Season 28, Gina Miles taking Season 23, and Huntley claiming the Season 24 title. So why step away now?
The answer appears to lie in his music.
In a December 2025 Instagram video shared with People, Niall hinted that he’s shifting focus back to the studio — and new music is officially on the way. “Oh, there will be music, for sure. There’s no doubt,” he said. “I’ve had a really fun year in the studio… it feels like the album of a 32-year-old. There’s a maturity to it that I don’t think I’ve had before.”
The tease sent fans into a frenzy, with many flooding the comments section with excitement about his upcoming release.
Although he won’t be part of Season 29, Niall looks back on his Voice journey with pride. In a December interview with Parade, he reflected on his winning streak and the artists he mentored. “I’ve been so lucky with the artists I’ve worked with,” he said. “The teams I’ve built over the three seasons have been incredible, and America has been so good to us.”
For now, fans may have to wait to see Niall back on The Voice — but if his next album is any indication, his time away from TV may be well worth it.
