Learning that a child has a chronic autoimmune disease can be overwhelming, but John Legend says love, unity, and resilience have helped his family navigate the road forward. The singer recently shared an update on how his 7-year-old son, Miles, is doing after being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
In an interview with PEOPLE, the 46-year-old artist opened up about how the diagnosis has affected Miles and his siblings. Legend shares Miles, along with daughters Luna and Esti, and son Wren, with his wife, Chrissy Teigen.
“The younger ones don’t really know what’s going on,” Legend explained. “But when they see the devices and things he has to wear, they naturally have questions.”
Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, leaving the body unable to regulate blood sugar on its own. While the diagnosis has brought challenges, Legend says it has also strengthened Miles in unexpected ways.
“His condition is building grit in him,” Legend shared. “And as a family, it’s building grit in all of us because we’re rallying together to support him.”
The EGOT winner has been deeply involved in Miles’ journey, even attending a summer DYF diabetes camp in Yosemite alongside his son. There, Miles was able to connect with other children living with diabetes, as well as counselors who understand the condition firsthand. The camp focuses on education, empowerment, and community for young people managing the disease.
Legend previously told PEOPLE that the diagnosis has brought his family closer than ever. “I’m very optimistic and very practical,” he said. “I knew it would be life-changing, but I also knew we could handle it. We’ve received great advice and incredible support.”
Reflecting on his partnership with Teigen, Legend added, “It makes us feel like a team. Knowing we can do this together just makes us stronger.”
Through openness and optimism, Legend’s story is a reminder that while life’s challenges can be unexpected, facing them with love and support can make all the difference.
