Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell have plenty to celebrate, especially when it comes to their daughter Kate Hudson’s continued success on screen.
Speaking with People ahead of a January 13 Q&A for Hudson’s new film Song Sung Blue, Hawn revealed that watching her daughter’s performance left the entire family emotional. The musical drama, inspired by the true story of Lightning & Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute band from the late 1980s, clearly struck a chord. “We all cried in unison,” Hawn said, adding that Hudson’s talent “never stops surprising” them.
Though Hudson’s biological father is Bill Hudson, she was raised by Hawn and Russell, whose long-standing partnership began after Hawn’s divorce in 1982. Growing up surrounded by creativity, alongside brother Oliver Hudson, helped shape Kate’s instincts as an actress. According to Hawn, her daughter’s ability comes from observation rather than instruction. “We learn by example,” she explained, emphasizing the shared genetics and artistic environment that defined their family life.

Russell, it turns out, may be Hudson’s biggest admirer. During the Q&A, Hawn shared how he was deeply moved by her performance, especially a scene featuring a Patsy Cline song. He reportedly told Hudson that he believes she is one of the greatest actors of her generation.
In Song Sung Blue, Hudson stars as singer Claire Sardina opposite Hugh Jackman, who plays her husband and musical partner. The role earned Hudson a Golden Globe nomination, further affirming the talent that continues to make her family proud.
