The country legend met D’Angelo, a makeup artist, in 1986 on the set of the TV movie Stagecoach. Their connection was immediate, though not simple. At the time, Nelson was still untangling his previous marriage, and D’Angelo needed to be sure he was truly free. By 1988, his divorce was final. Three years later, they were married.

Since tying the knot in 1991, the couple has built a life that has quietly endured for more than three decades.
