Kacey Musgraves Recalls Her First Time Smoking Weed with Willie Nelson: ‘Hazy, Sparkly Pipe Dream’

Kacey Musgraves celebrated the nine-year anniversary of her second album Pageant Material with a heartfelt Instagram post, reflecting on her special bond with country legend Willie Nelson.

The “Butterflies” singer, 35, recalled the first time she smoked weed with Nelson, 91, while touring in 2014 opening for him and Alison Krauss. “He had us on his bus for coffee and a smoke before his set,” Musgraves wrote. “We talked about everything… light-up western suits, conspiracy theories, aliens, his early job cutting trees, hemp history, and old songs.”

Their conversation led to her covering Nelson’s deep cut, Are You Sure, with him. “Next thing I know we’re in Austin filming the video,” she shared, posting photos of Nelson in a western suit and a celebratory tequila shot. Musgraves called the moment “hazy, sparkly, and unforgettable.”

She added that she’s currently taking a break from smoking weed, joking it’s “early-20s Kacey behavior” and perhaps something for later life.
