Dad Told Us to Buy Mom Kitchen Stuff Because “She Can’t Cook” — He Regretted It on Christmas Morning

This Christmas, my brother (16M) and I (14F) overheard something that made our blood boil.
Our dad was on the phone with his brother, laughing and saying,

“What do you get Lily? Only kitchen stuff, man. Mixers, blenders, utensils… Maybe if she gets better gadgets, she’ll finally learn how to cook.”

Our mom, Lily, works full-time, does all the laundry, cleans the house, helps us with homework, and somehow still finds time to pack Dad’s lunches. Cooking isn’t her favorite thing — mostly because she barely has time — but that doesn’t mean she deserves to be mocked.

So, my brother and I decided we weren’t going to let Dad get away with that.
If he wanted everyone to buy Mom “kitchen stuff,” then fine — we’d make sure he got exactly what he asked for.

We secretly called our relatives and explained everything. Everyone agreed to play along.

Christmas morning came. The whole family — about twelve of us — sat around the tree, exchanging gifts. Dad was all smiles, waiting for Mom to open her “surprise.”

Mom opened the first box: a tiny plastic toy frying pan.
Everyone chuckled.

The next gift? A “Learn to Cook for Dummies” book… for Dad.
Then came an apron that said, “Master Chef of Excuses.”

Dad’s smile started fading.

He opened a box labeled “From Your Loving Kids” — inside was a cheap plastic kitchen playset, the kind made for toddlers. The final gift? A framed photo of Mom with the caption:

“Best Mom, Not Your Chef.”

Everyone burst out laughing — even Mom, who couldn’t stop giggling.

Dad, red-faced, said, “What the hell is this?!”

I looked at him and said, “Well, you said Mom needed kitchen stuff to learn how to cook… so we thought you could learn together.”

The room went silent for a second — then everyone roared with laughter again. Dad didn’t say a word after that.

That night, he ordered takeout and even helped clean up afterward.
Mom kissed us goodnight and whispered,

“Best Christmas ever.”
